Death with Echoes: The Best New Crime Thrillers are Tangled and Resonant

by Susanna Yager
Sunday Telegraph, November 9, 2003

It's hard to believe that The Rizzoli Contract by Kevin Stevens (Townhouse/Pocket, £6.99 pbk) is a first novel, so accomplished is the plotting and the writing. Set in 1980s Boston, this tale of betrayal, corruption and thwarted ambition is narrated by Harry Donohue, a small-time publisher, who sees the acquisition of the rights to the autobiography of a notorious corrupt policeman as the answer to his money problems. The characters seem so real that one feels irritation as Harry, befuddled by his increasing drinking and consequent lack of judgment, gets himself into more and more trouble.
